"Fashion is what you're offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose." —Lauren Hutton
*Rotimi voice* "Ladies, ladies, and more ladies." So, 2020 definitely isn't going the way we all expected, at all. By any means. BUT, one thing I can promise you is that you can still laugh, be positive, and frankly...you can still look good when things aren't necessarily going your way. Now, I don't know about you but my quarantine-fit-pics are definitely going to be dropping soon. I just wrote a similar article for my boys, but now it's time for my girlies to get on-trend. So here is another culmination of trends I am seeing on the runways and IRL for 2020 Spring & Summer.
Bermuda Shorts: 8-Year-Old Me is Shaking RN
Tanya Taylor came through with the Bermuda Shorts in her collection. Honestly, truly...I dreaded these as a child. All my other friends were wearing coochie-cutters while my dad dressed me and my sisters in the Bermuda shorts he got from the boy's section at GAP. Alas, they have become my latest obsession, so, mind your business if you see me rocking them.
Bermuda shorts are so easy to style. Whether they're denim, linen, or cotton, you can take a pair of them anywhere; from brunch to the office. Here's a real-world example of how to wear them! Obviously, they aren't the most flattering silhouette upon first glance, but if you take a slightly oversized pair and sinch it with a blet, BOOM! You've got shape.
Wearing them with a pair of pointed-toe-heels is a SUPER cute way to dress them up! If you want to off-set the bagginess, pair with a bodysuit or fitted/cropped top. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it's super easy to dress them down, as well. An oversized pullover or knit sweater is a surefire way to make this outfit a vibe. For a less street-style look, throw on a cute pair of flat mules, OR for a super casual look...you already know what shoes I'm gonna say. Jordan 1s or 4s baby!
Feathers: Proud as a Peacock
I know. I was surprised too. "How do we tastefully wear feathers?" RIGHT?! Well, this look from Prabal Gurung does a great job of gracefully bringing feathers back into orbit. Honestly, feathers make me nervous. They're quite loud and messy. But as we see here, when it's done right, this has the potential to set off some incredible outfits.
If you aren't too into the loud prints and textures, here is a way to subtly get outside of your comfort zone. When added as an accent to a garment, feathers add a lot of texture to a look. The contrast between the knit AND print choice of the suit, and the colorful feathering on the hem makes this such an interesting piece. Now, imagine it without the feathers...not as fun right?
If you're here for all the texture and the flashiness, then go for it. Full feather bandeau tops or mini dresses are so cute. Like seriously...so cute. Usually dressed up, the dresses can be worn with open-toe heels, as we see here. As for the tops, you can always dress them up with a pair of mom jeans and heels, or dress down by switching out the heels for a pair of Nike Air Forces or Adidas Superstars.
Wide Leg Jeans: RIP Mom Jeans
The VSCO girls are going to have an existential crisis with this one. Now, I am a fan of a mom jean for the simple fact that it's baggier and less form-fitting than any other silhouette of denim (along with a boyfriend jean of course). But wide legs, are even better. It's basically a pair of denim sweatpants. I mean...we love to see it.
Wide leg jeans differ from mom jeans in that they don't really cling to any part of the body, whereas mom jeans tend to fit on the bum and thigh area and then loosen up around the lower thigh/knee area. Giving off very 90s Aaliyah energy, they're super comfy and versatile.
Just like any other silhouette of denim, they can be easily dressed up or down. When I dress these jeans down, I always go for the 90s, tomboy look; topping the already oversized denim with an oversized graphic tee or pullover, throwing on a pair of gold hoops, a baseball cap, and of course...sneakers. On the rare occasion that I'm actually feeling like putting on a pair of heels, I'll off-set the bagginess of the jeans with a fitted bodysuit or a super cropped top. Finishing it off with an oversized jacket to throw over the shoulders, and a cute bag of course.
Oversized Bags: The More the Merrier
Now, THIS I can get behind. Last year it was all about the micro bags Jacquemus made popular, but now brands like Celine are completely switching it up and going for bigger bag silhouettes. I love myself a tote bag, so I'm excited to be seeing useful sized bags on the runway. I mean the micro bags were cute in theory, but all you can fit in there is your lipgloss cap and an ID.
Practical and cute, tote and duffle style bags are staples in your accessory closet. I've seen a lot of designers playing with the material of these bags as well! From puffer bags to faux fur bags (emphasis on the faux), there's something to fit everyone's taste. Streetstyle has definitely made these bags more interesting and if I may say...we love to see it.
Not only did Bottega Veneta bring these bags back into style, but other designer brands such as Christian Dior made sure they were on-trend, as well. This tote bag is to die for and is a super good pairing for a casual day outfit. Now it retails at about $3,000, but brands like ASOS have so many cute totes that can fit into everyone's budget. Carry bags like this with sweatpants, sweat-shorts, or wide-leg jeans on a quick run to the store.
Crocodile Print: Bear Grylls, Eat Your Heart Out
Snake print...please move along. We're exploiting other reptiles now. Frankly, snake print got old very quickly, so let's hope the crocodile has a more graceful run. I'm here for this. Croc print is gorgeous and as we see here, from this collection by Sies Marjan, it's super versatile and can be worked into garments of clothing just as easily as it can be worked into a plethora of different accessories.
This trend can be worn pretty easily by simply pairing an outfit with a pair of crocodile print shoes. Knee-length boots (stopping right below the knee) or a pair of mules. It's a good way to take an outfit from day-to-night! A simple outfit like a pair of denim shorts and a cropped tee with sneakers is a daytime look, but pair it with a crocodile print knee boots and now you can wear it anywhere. For an extra layer, throw an oversized blazer on top.
Bags are one of the easiest ways to accessorize, and luckily there are so many different shapes of bags to experiment with! We all have seen a croc print bag before but let's try to partner this trend with the one we just talked about: an oversized bag! A croc tote or shoulder bag can completely change the vibe of your outfit. If you've been wanting to transition your style over from laidback to more formal or business-like, this is a really good place to start.
